LT, CRs and Members -
There are 2 HoD topics that need our attention, this one on health
disparities, the other will be in a separate e-mail on dues.
Please provide input on this topic to AODA's House of Delegates Chair,
Naomi Trostler at HDC at EatrightOverseas.org. This is being passed
through our member networks so please generate discussion.
Naomi will compile AODA members opinions on this and contribute our
input to the ADA HoD discussions. This process is what directs and
guides our leaders so your input is vital!
Thanks, Stacia

Dialogue Session #1: Health Disparities

House of Delegates Fact Sheet: HEALTH DISPARITIES
*Big Question: How does the HOD increase the profession's awareness of
the complexity of health disparities so that individual dietetics
practitioners can determine their personal contribution to eliminating
health disparities?*
**
*
Importance *
· Health disparities (also called health inequalities in some
countries) refer to gaps in the quality of health and healthcare across
racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The Health Resources and
Services Administration defines health disparities as
"population-specific differences in the presence of disease, health
outcomes, or access to healthcare."
· In the US, health disparities are well documented in minority
populations such as African-Americans, Native Americans, Asian
Americans, and Latinos. When compared to whites, these minority groups
have higher incidence of chronic diseases, higher mortality, and poorer
health outcomes.
*Challenges*
· Disparities can result from three main areas:
- from personal, socioeconomic, and environmental
characteristics of different groups;
- from the barriers in access when trying to enter into the
healthcare system; and,
- from the quality of healthcare different ethnic and racial
groups receive.
· Specific barriers in access to care can include the following:
- lack of insurance coverage;
- lack of a regular source of care;
- lack of financial resources;
- legal barriers;
- structural barriers;
- the healthcare financing system;
- scarcity of providers;
- linguistic barriers;
- health literacy; and,
- lack of diversity in the healthcare workforce.
· Whether the causes of these disparities are biological or
environmental, the role of dietetics practitioners appears to be crucial.
· General health status, birth outcomes, and diseases such as
diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and coronary heart disease are related
to diet and lifestyle, and we have the nutritional science expertise to
provide the appropriate care.

*Dilemma *
· Unfortunately, health provider contribution to health
disparities, especially as it relates to dietetics, has been largely
unexplored. Very limited data exist on the contribution of the dietetics
profession to the issue of health disparities. Lack of research data
creates challenges to the development of interventions that are
evidence-based.
· Where dietetics practitioners may fall short is in our
awareness of this growing dilemma and lack of special knowledge and
skills needed to work effectively.
*Pre-Meeting Activities*
Visit you state's health department Web site and search for the key term
"health disparities" and review any information provided. Utilize other
networks and avenues to determine your community's pulse regarding
health disparities. Reflect on the following questions and discuss your
responses with your delegate.
***We Want to Know*
1) What do you know about health disparities in your community?
Describe the situation.
2) What really surprised you about health disparities in your
community? Describe your reaction.
Provide responses to your delegate by Thursday, September 20,
2007.
